Skill development is not a panache to address unemployment: Manik

Agartala, 26.08.2015: The sub-group of Chief Ministers on Skill Development headed by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal made a slew of recommendations, including a legislation to guarantee skill development to youths, at its final meeting which was convened here today to fine-tune its proposed recommendations. While summing up the deliberations at the meeting, NITI Aayog CEO Sindushree Khullar informed the members that the final report would be submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Badal within a week.During the meeting, non-Congress Chief Ministers, especially CPM’s Manik Sarkar from Tripura cautioned the government not to consider the skill development drive as an end-all measure to tackle unemployment.Officials privy to the deliberations at the meeting said Badal congratulated Modi for his pragmatic steps, including constitution of the sub-group, to tackle unemployment. Badal said the country needed to provide skill training to 109 million new entrants to the job market, and around 460 million people needed to be re-skilled and up-skilled up to 2020.“Skill development is not a panache to address the problem of unemployment. The numbers of unemployment in the country are rapidly mounting,” Sarkar said. He said the government should make ample budgetary allocations to avoid the project being ending up in being “visionary”.
