Fishery in Tripura
A most important sector which plays an important role in upliftment of economic condition in rural areas and also provides employment to the unemployed. Popularisation and adoption of various schemes and projects by the Department of Fisheries, Government of Tripura, in an integrated way, plays a meaningful role in socio-economic development of Tripura. Fishery sector plays an important role in nutritional security, employment and development of rural and urban socio-economic status.
The Department of Fisheries has launched 7(Seven) years perspective plan from the period from 2004-2005 to 2010-2011 for providing 13 Kg. of fish per year. The minimum requirement of fish in Tripura per year for an individual is 11 Kg.
Most of the people, about 95% of the total population, in Tripura take fish as a diet. Besides, a number of people consume dry-fish. But the present production of fish in the state is below than the minimum requirement. The level of exploitation and utilization of the resources for aquaculture purpose is low.
To overcome this scenario and to make the state self-sufficient in fishery by 2010-11, the Department of Fisheries started implementation of various development schemes under Perspective Plan since 2004-05 in a mission mode.
OBJECTIVES:
- Making Tripura self sufficient in fish (increasing availability to 13 Kg per capita) from its own resources by 2010-11 A.D.
- Entrepreneurship development and creation of self employment opportunities, especially in the rural sector for the unemployed youths.
- Socio-economic upliftment of poor fishermen with special emphasis on Scheduled caste, Scheduled tribe communities and women groups
Strategy
- Utilisation of all available as well as new created aquaculture resources for scientific fish culture with average per hectare production of 3000 Kg per year by 2012 A.D.
- Encouraging entrepreneurship development with special emphasis on SHGs, tribals and women to participate in fishery development.
- Creating or strengthening required infrastructure for production, transport and marketing of fish.
