DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES OF HORTICULTURE AND SOIL CONSERVATION IN TRIPURA

Tripura is endowed with favorable climatic conditions which offer immense scope for cultivation of various kinds of Horticultural crops including fruits, vegetables, spices, nuts, flowers and other ornamentals. The horticultural sector has been establishing increasingly its credibility for improving the productivity of land, generating employment, improving the economic condition of farmers and entrepreneurs, enhancing export and above all, providing nutritional security to people.

Nevertheless, it was only the Eighth Plan that horticulture received some recognition in terms of investments in the country and the state as well as special fill up was given only in the Ninth Plan period, assigning priority in resource management, diversification and value addition.

In Tripura, from 1998-1999 to 2001-2002 there has been significant change in the approaches to the development activities and achievements in horticultural sector. The brief account of activities and achievements till date is furnished here with an ultimate objective of informing the concerned section of the society about the exercise, scopes and future plan of the Government in developing horticulture sector in the state.

 Prelude:

The Horticultural activities of the state started with the establishment of some model orchards during early sixties. However, considering its immense scope and potentialities, a separate wing was created and thus the Directorate of Horticulture and Soil conservation started functioning since June 1986 with infrastructure up to the District level. The tribal people have traditionally grown fruits like Jackfruit, Orange and Pineapple since times immemorial. But the demand for areca nut, coconut, and lemon was almost non-existent. Now there is a lot of demand of fruits in the state.

Over the years, the production of vegetables has also gained momentum in the state. Previously, vegetable from outside the State used to come in Tripura whereas some vegetables like ‘Kakrol’, ‘chara kachu’ (mukhi), patol, radish, sweet gourd etc are reaching the markets of other states too. The cultivation of vegetables, which was mainly confined to traditional areas, has now spread over to non-traditional areas. Also, induction of hybrid vegetables has started a new era in vegetable cultivation in the state.
